Searx Party wins MetaGer vs Searx Party for readers who want to begin with free metasearch. Choose MetaGer if you prefer a funded search key and its anonymous-token integrations. Both combine outside search sources; the real decision is free hosted access versus a paid service with its own access system.

MetaGer vs Searx Party: a key can use one-time tokens

MetaGer's anonymous-token documentation explains a surprising distinction. The Android app and browser extension send locally generated, single-use tokens instead of the same search-key password with every request. The design aims to prevent connecting individual searches through that repeated key.

That feature is about reaching search itself. MetaGer also documents a server-side browser for reading destinations, covered by its separate anonymous-opening instructions.

MetaGer and Searx Party are both listed in the directory. Searx Party runs SearXNG, whose open software and hosted instances need to be considered separately when choosing where to send a query.

Cost: Searx Party is the easier first visit

Searx Party gives you a free hosted search page. That makes it the simpler recommendation for someone changing a browser default for the first time. You can decide whether its source mix helps without choosing a payment method or maintaining a balance.

MetaGer uses tokens. Its US Prices page charges one for a default web search and explains that selecting search services affects cost. The packages appear in euros, so a fixed US-dollar entry would be a conversion rather than the vendor's displayed offer.

The same page offers a refund request for unused credit within 30 days after purchase. It also contains mixed wording about token validity: a heading says two years, while nearby text says tokens remain until used. I would read the purchase terms before funding a large balance instead of treating either sentence as a permanent promise.

For light use, the token model can make sense without a monthly subscription. For frequent research, you need to think about how many queries your routine produces. A short question may lead to follow-up searches, especially while learning unfamiliar terminology.

The weakness of free hosted searching is that there isn't a paid balance securing access to a particular commercial arrangement. The instance depends on its operator and upstream availability. That doesn't make paid search automatically better, but it changes what you are funding when you choose MetaGer.

My pick is to start with Searx Party when the goal is simply finding a free alternative. Pick MetaGer when its key model and additional privacy tools solve a named problem in your search routine.

Winner for starting without a payment: Searx Party.

Control: hosted instances and source code are separate choices

Searx Party is one instance of SearXNG. Its About page describes the project and browser integration. It doesn't make every other SearXNG instance part of the same hosted service.

The operator decides which engines are available and how the service is configured. Search preferences can change your experience within that instance, but they don't give you ownership of its server. If a provider stops answering, a saved browser preference won't restore that provider's response.

Self-hosting SearXNG is possible, and its documentation describes the route. That adds a separate job: maintaining a server and following upstream changes. A reader who wants a free page today doesn't need to adopt that job merely to search.

MetaGer also publishes source, but my recommendation is about its operated service. Paying for a key is different from installing its code. Choose the hosted service for its billing and supported access paths. Its repository doesn't promise that every deployed component is identical.

For a family sharing a search preference, MetaGer's key guidance describes using a key across devices. For a person who just wants a browser search option, Searx Party's OpenSearch support is a smaller starting point. Neither decision requires replacing your browser.

The choice gets simpler when you name what you want to control: your preferences, the server configuration, or the whole software deployment. Only the first belongs to ordinary hosted browsing.

Winner for operating your own configurable metasearch setup: SearXNG, the software behind Searx Party.

Availability: both inherit changes from outside providers

Metasearch combines other services. The SearXNG public-instance guide describes provider blocks and CAPTCHAs. An instance can be reachable while some engines return no results or errors.

That explains why a missing result shouldn't immediately become a verdict about the entire project. A query's subject, an enabled engine and a temporary upstream response can all affect the result set. Keep the original question and inspect any displayed engine error before repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

MetaGer is exposed to provider changes too. Its GitLab issue 1352 discusses Microsoft's planned Bing API shutdown in August 2025 and possible optional AI features. A provider's commercial decision can force a metasearch operator to change its sources even when users haven't changed anything.

The current issue is a plan, not proof that an AI assistant has shipped. I wouldn't choose MetaGer for an unverified feature proposal. Its present key system and documented anonymous-browsing tools are the concrete features available for this comparison.

For research that needs a specific official page, keep that source URL once you find it. A bookmarked manual avoids making every return visit depend on the same search result still appearing. For new subjects, having a second engine nearby is practical without running your own instance.

Winner for guaranteed upstream access: neither. Choose based on the currently documented service, then keep the source pages you need.

What users and maintainers say

A December 2025 SearXNG issue reports DuckDuckGo CAPTCHA failures during automated queries. The reporter thanks the developers, while maintainer return42 recommends updating the instance and links the existing CAPTCHA issue.

MetaGer has loyal users: a 2022 Hacker News comment names it as the writer's regular Google replacement. The concrete pressure on its provider mix appears in MetaGer issue 1352, where the project discusses the Bing change and keeping possible AI features separate from traditional search.

My recommendation follows those details. A free instance needs an operator who keeps up with providers. A paid metasearch service still needs to adapt when an upstream API changes. The price is only one part of that job.

Choose MetaGer if…

  • You want search access through a funded key without email signup.
  • The app or extension's anonymous-token design matters to you.
  • You want its documented anonymous-opening feature.
  • You prefer paying the service directly to relying on a free instance.

Choose Searx Party if…

  • You want to begin searching without payment.
  • A public SearXNG instance is enough for your routine.
  • You're comfortable with operator-selected engines.
  • You may later operate SearXNG yourself and accept that maintenance job.

Other options

Kagi Search offers an account-based paid search setup. The existing Kagi versus Qwant page covers another free-versus-paid choice. Marginalia Search and Wiby favor discovery, while Mwmbl adds shared contributions.

The metasearch category collects the directory entries. The existing Presearch alternatives page gives a broader list if neither of these is your preferred default.

FAQ

Is MetaGer free like Searx Party?

Ordinary paid MetaGer searching needs a funded token balance, while Searx Party displays a free public search page. MetaGer's US pricing page charges one token for a default web query and displays its packages in euros. A randomly generated key is the access mechanism; generating it doesn't supply unlimited free searches.

Do I need to install SearXNG to use Searx Party?

No, Searx Party is an already-hosted public instance. You can open it in a browser and search without installing server software. Running your own SearXNG instance is a separate choice that gives you configuration control and adds maintenance. Browser search integration is also separate from installing the server application.

Can I transfer a MetaGer balance to Searx Party?

No transfer is documented between the services. MetaGer tokens fund its own service; Searx Party's public instance doesn't use that balance. You can change your browser's search setting and keep saved destination URLs. Any request to refund unused MetaGer credit follows MetaGer's purchase terms rather than the replacement engine.
