Socket.IO is a library that enables real-time, bidirectional and event-based communication between the browser and the server. It consists of a Node.js server and a JavaScript client library, with additional community-maintained client implementations in other languages. The client establishes a WebSocket connection when possible and falls back on HTTP long polling. The library offers auto-reconnection support and can send events to all connected clients across multiple servers.
