SimpleX Chat is a private and encrypted messenger without any user IDs. Users make a private connection via link or QR code to send messages and make calls. Every contact and group is stored on the device rather than in a server's database, and anyone can run servers. From v6.2 the app supports business addresses for customer communication.
Cabal is a chat platform for friends and communities that works offline. Devices in a cabal communicate directly with each other rather than through a server, and users can read history and write messages offline, syncing later. Cabals use secret joining keys, have channels for topics, and rely on subjective moderation by users.
Cwtch is the official cwtch.im peer implementation, written mainly in Go. Its README describes it as privacy-preserving infrastructure for asynchronous, decentralized and metadata-resistant applications, extending the metadata-resistant Ricochet protocol to support asynchronous, multi-peer group communications through discardable, untrusted, anonymous infrastructure. The README notes that a server section is out of date and that no current docker container exists.
Messenger-Matrix is a privacy tool for blocking ads, trackers, popups, proxies, or unwanted web behavior.
Tox is a free, open-source instant messaging application that connects users without anyone else listening in. It offers instant messaging, voice and video calls, screen sharing, file sharing and group chats. The network is distributed with no central servers, made up of its users, and everything is encrypted using open-source libraries. Tox is free software and comes without advertising.
