Framer is my pick for a small marketing website you want to design and maintain visually. Choose Figma when the main deliverable is a product design system or interface handoff. The important change in Figma vs Framer is Figma Sites: Figma can now publish websites too, so the decision goes beyond whether it has a Publish button.

Figma vs Framer at a glance

Figma includes several products with different access needs. Framer puts its visual editor, CMS and hosting around a website. Price the job you plan to maintain: design editing, a published site, or both.

Figma Sites' beta status matters to a website decision. Its current publishing lesson says Starter users need a paid plan to publish. It doesn't turn a Collab or Dev seat into a website-editor seat, and Design prototypes remain separate from an actual published site.

Design work: Figma keeps the product's source files

Figma is the stronger choice for a team maintaining a product interface across many screens. Components, design files and prototypes give that work a home before engineers implement it. A marketing page is one output; a reusable system for the app is another.

If the team is changing a dialog, its error state and its mobile layout, the source design still matters after the website launches. Keeping those decisions in a shared Design file is easier to justify than paying for a website tool only to use it as a drawing canvas.

Framer has components too, but their purpose is to drive the website you publish in Framer. A component in the design system and one on a live website may share the same look while having different behavior. An import won't make those two objects identical automatically.

My reservation about Figma is buying broad Full-seat access for someone who only needs to comment. Its Professional seat menu also includes Dev and Collab, so review access and design-editing access have different prices. For a design team, the seat decision is part of keeping the workspace affordable.

Winner for a product design system and interface handoff: Figma.

Website work: Framer makes the published site the main object

Framer's appeal is that a visual design becomes the website the owner maintains. Its CMS, hosting and publishing controls sit around that same project. For a portfolio or a company site, the next revision may be a new case study or a changed contact section, not another engineering handoff.

Figma Sites makes publishing from the Figma workspace possible, with responsive layouts and interactions. Its publishing lesson describes a figma.site subdomain and the option to add a custom domain. Check the current domain terms for the chosen plan; older promotional dates don't price a new site today.

I favor Framer when website operations are the reason for buying the tool. Basic's two CMS collections and 1,000 items cover a modest repeating-content structure. Pro increases these to ten collections and 2,500 items, alongside 150 site pages and 100 GB bandwidth before any add-ons.

The weakness is hosting portability. Framer's Figma-to-HTML explanation describes a hosted publishing workflow, not a raw HTML/CSS/JavaScript export you can take to any server. If the contract ends with a self-hosted source package, a managed Framer project is a different deliverable.

Winner for a small visual website with its own CMS and hosting: Framer.

Pricing: compare site plans and editor seats separately

Figma Professional Full is $16 per seat per month billed annually ($192 per year), or $20 monthly. Collab is $3 annually ($36 per year), or $5 monthly; Dev is $12 annually ($144 per year), or $15 monthly. The cheaper seats don't include Design editing or Sites editing/publishing.

Framer pricing lists Basic at $10 per site per month billed annually ($120 per year), or $15 monthly, and Pro at $30 annually ($360 per year), or $45 monthly. Extra editors are $20 per month on annual billing or $30 on monthly billing. Viewers are free.

For a solo site owner, the annual Basic website rate is lower than one Professional Full seat. That calculation doesn't make it a cheaper replacement for a company design system. It compares the starting prices of two jobs that can overlap but don't have identical outputs.

For a team, separate people who change design from people who update content. Framer also lists content-editor access, with a different scope from full editor access. Someone updating a CMS entry doesn't necessarily need to control the whole visual layout, and the available role affects cost.

Annual rates also mean an annual commitment. My price choice is Framer Basic for a solo website, while Figma makes more sense when its design access is already central to the team's work. Winner for the entry solo website bill: Framer.

Moving a design: import the structure, then build the website behavior

Framer's Figma import workflow uses its official Figma plugin to copy frames, layers and visual structure onto the Framer canvas. You can then change the content and layout. It's a starting point for an editable website project.

After import, the website still needs its responsive behavior, interactions and content connections. A picture of a form is not a form submission flow. A repeated design card doesn't become a populated CMS collection merely because its visual layers arrived.

For a handoff, identify one page that includes the site's important behavior: a list of articles, a detail page or a contact form. Complete that page in the destination before importing dozens of decorative sections. It will reveal which parts of the design are assets and which need website functionality.

Figma source files can remain the reference for design decisions while Framer holds the live site. This is a reasonable split when the marketing team controls publication and the product team maintains the app interface. It becomes awkward if nobody knows which tool owns the next change.

The SVG export guide covers transferring individual vector assets. Winner for continuing an existing design: keep Figma as its source and use Framer only for the website work you need.

What users say

A May 2026 Figma Sites discussion criticizes bugs and output quality, while a later reply praises being able to publish organized sketches without switching tools. One commenter finds Framer familiar after using Figma. That gives both sides of the appeal: fewer transfers versus a website-focused editor.

A September 2026 Framer portfolio post praises the familiar design and component work. The author also describes AI-credit pressure and hours of debugging custom interactions. Replies praise the finished site's creativity; the result still took work to make behave as intended.

A September Figma Trustpilot review likes the interactions and interface but reports slow loading and instability. My biggest objection to Figma for a simple website is buying into a larger design workspace. My biggest objection to Framer is committing the site to a hosted project when the owner expects portable code.

WordPress fits a publication with an extensible CMS. Miro fits discovery workshops before detailed design. Photopea fits layered image assets. The creative-design directory covers more tools, and the related alternatives page separates these replacement jobs.

FAQ

Can Figma publish a website now?

Yes, Figma Sites supports web publishing and remains in open beta in the checked documentation. Editing and publishing need a Full seat, and Starter users need a paid plan to publish. This is separate from sharing a Design prototype, which lets someone review an interface without making it a live website.

Is Framer cheaper than Figma?

Framer Basic has the lower entry annual rate for a solo website: $10 per month billed annually ($120 per year), or $15 monthly. Figma Professional Full is $16 per seat per month annually ($192 per year), or $20 monthly. Extra Framer editors and site add-ons can change a team's total.

Can I import a Figma design into Framer?

Yes, Framer's official plugin imports frames, layers and visual structure. The result can be edited in Framer, then given responsive breakpoints, interactions and CMS connections. Treat the import as the start of website work; it doesn't turn every static drawing into a working form, database-driven list or production interaction.

Can I export a Framer website for my own server?

No, Framer's documented Figma-to-HTML workflow doesn't provide a raw HTML, CSS and JavaScript export for independent hosting. It produces a hosted Framer project. If portable source is part of the deliverable, agree on another build route or use a system such as self-hosted WordPress that supports that ownership model.
