Flipboard wins Apple News vs Flipboard for most readers who want free discovery and collections they can share across devices. Choose Apple News+ if its included publications replace subscriptions you'd otherwise buy. The deciding difference is paid publisher access: collecting a story in Flipboard doesn't include a subscription to its publisher.

Apple News vs Flipboard: a subscription buys a different job

Apple News+ costs $12.99 per month in the US after the trial, according to Apple's product page, checked October 9, 2026. The ordinary Apple News service is free. News+ adds publications, magazine issues, audio stories and puzzles.

Flipboard gives readers a way to discover stories and collect them in magazines. Its official guides describe private and public collections and invited contributors. That is my pick when the thing you want to make is a reading collection other people can follow.

These products overlap in the morning-news habit, but the paid decision isn't “which app displays more headlines?” It is whether the News+ catalog contains the publications you actually want to read in that subscription.

Price: Flipboard wins unless News+ replaces paid reading

Start with the publications, not the trial offer. A free month is helpful for checking a catalog, but it isn't the recurring cost. Apple advertises more than 500 publications, yet a catalog count won't tell you whether the newspaper or magazine you want is included in your region.

News+ makes sense when several included titles are part of your regular reading. It makes less sense if you mainly open free articles and only want a prettier route to them. There is a free Apple News tier for that habit, so the choice isn't limited to subscribing or leaving Apple's app completely.

Flipboard's price advantage is strongest for discovery. You can follow a topic and gather stories without buying a reading subscription from Flipboard. If a selected newspaper story reaches a subscription screen, the publisher's charge belongs outside that free app price.

Apple also supports Family Sharing for News+ with up to five other family members. That changes the value for a household already interested in the same catalog. It doesn't turn the subscription into a group publishing space: family access and contributor editing are different features.

My recommendation is to shortlist the titles you read before starting News+. If the subscription doesn't cover those titles, its audio and puzzle extras need to justify the bill on their own. Don't count several publications you might someday read as replacement subscriptions.

Price winner: Flipboard for free discovery; Apple News+ when its included catalog replaces paid reading.

Platforms: Flipboard is the easier mixed-device choice

Apple's reading experience centers on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Its subscription help names four supported News+ countries: Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. That can settle the decision before you compare a single feature.

Flipboard's help gives instructions for web, Android and iOS. A shared collection can therefore fit a group whose members don't all own the same type of phone. One person can collect from an Android app while another reads the magazine in a browser.

For an Apple-only household, this advantage may mean very little. An app integrated into devices you already use can be convenient, and Apple's product page includes offline magazine issues and audio listening. A person who reads magazine issues on an iPad has a different need from someone opening article links on an office computer.

The practical question is where the next reading session happens. If it starts on Android, Apple News+ isn't the natural answer. If it starts with a downloaded magazine issue on an iPad, the subscription is closer to the task.

Platform winner: Flipboard for mixed devices; Apple News+ for its supported Apple-device reading features.

Collections: Flipboard lets readers become editors

Flipboard magazines give a collection a title and description. Stories can include a caption explaining why they belong. Other people can contribute after an invitation, while the creator retains administrative controls.

That is a meaningful difference for a class, book club or work group. The result is a shared reading destination. You aren't merely asking everyone to follow the same topic and hope their recommendations match.

Apple News is stronger when you want the app to present a reading selection without maintaining a publication of your own. Apple's editors choose top stories, and personalized recommendations help populate the app. Following sources and topics is less editorial work than naming and maintaining a public collection.

A Flipboard magazine also asks something of its creator. A collection full of unrelated stories weakens its topic; one that never receives another story can stop being interesting to followers. The freedom to curate doesn't automatically produce a collection people want to read.

The News Search category includes both discovery tools and feed readers. For a private publication-monitoring routine, NetNewsWire follows subscriptions without requiring a magazine identity.

Collection winner: Flipboard for curation and contributors; Apple News for a reading-first routine.

Format: issues and audio favor News+, linked stories favor Flipboard

News+ includes cover-to-cover magazine issues, selected professionally narrated articles and exclusive puzzles. Those extras make it a package of reading formats, not simply a list of links behind a subscription button.

Flipboard's creation help describes articles, videos, Notes, photos and URLs inside magazines. A collection can mix formats around a topic. A magazine about a hiking route could contain an article, a video and a photo with commentary, instead of reproducing a conventional publication issue.

Choose the format you will return to. If you want a magazine's complete issue for a trip, Apple's offline issue download is a concrete benefit. If you want to collect material from different publishers around a project, Flipboard's collection structure is the stronger fit.

Neither app owns every publisher destination. A story may have an access rule or a layout chosen by its publisher. A reading interface can make discovery pleasant while the destination still presents a different experience.

Format winner: Apple News+ for included issues and narrated content; Flipboard for mixed-source collections.

What users say

A February 8, 2026 Reddit discussion about Apple News advertising includes readers who value access to multiple publications but dislike the ads. Several comments also remember Flipboard's magazine presentation fondly. The paid appeal and the reading irritation can coexist.

For Flipboard, the feature I value most is sharing a collection people can follow. Its weakness is that the free collection doesn't include paid publisher access. That cost distinction matters more to my verdict than nostalgia for the original tablet interface.

Choose Apple News if…

  • Your regular reading devices and region support it.
  • The News+ catalog contains titles you would otherwise pay for.
  • Downloaded issues or narrated articles are part of your reading habit.

Choose Flipboard if…

  • Your group reads across Android, iOS and browsers.
  • You want to curate a magazine or invite contributors.
  • You're happy with free discovery plus each publisher's own access rules.

Other options

AllSides is an option for comparing how outlets frame news. NewsBreak focuses on local discovery. Capy Reader is the Android route for a feed list you choose, while NetNewsWire is the Apple-device RSS route. Those solve more specific reading jobs than an all-purpose magazine app.

FAQ

Is Apple News free?

Yes, the standard Apple News service is free. Apple News+ is a separate subscription advertised at $12.99 per month in the US after the trial, checked October 9, 2026. It adds included publication content, magazine issues, selected audio stories and puzzles. The free tier doesn't contain every News+ benefit.

Does Flipboard include paid newspaper subscriptions?

No. Creating or following a free Flipboard magazine doesn't buy access to every publisher linked inside it. A collected story can still open a newspaper's subscription screen. Apple News+ has an included catalog, so compare that catalog with your reading list if paid publisher access is the reason you're choosing an app.

Can I use Apple News+ on Android?

Apple's current News+ subscription instructions cover iPhone, iPad and Mac, not an Android reading app. The service is also restricted to the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Flipboard's help covers Android, iOS and web use, making it the more practical choice when your everyday reading device is an Android phone.

Can I move my Apple News reading into Flipboard?

You can rebuild topics and selected links, but the official help doesn't describe importing an Apple News account as a Flipboard magazine. Paid News+ access remains with Apple's subscription. Treat the move as choosing sources and curating a new collection; don't expect saved state and subscription rights to transfer as one file.
