How websites are selected

The directory covers technology and the digital tools people use to work, learn, build and play. A site has to fit a subcategory here before it can be listed.

What is in scope

Software and online tools, AI and machine learning, programming and development, cloud and hosting, privacy and security, design and creative software, work and business software, technical learning and reference, technology news and communities, mobile, gaming, media platforms, legitimate file transfer, data and analytics, and hardware resources.

What is out of scope

Health, government, general lifestyle, retail, travel and general entertainment collections. Unlicensed download or streaming services are excluded, and a listing in the media or file-sharing categories has to point at an official, licensed or otherwise permitted source.

What a candidate needs

  • A working address on a public domain, with a stable destination rather than a temporary redirect.
  • A distinct website or service has one main subcategory and may also appear in a few relevant subcategories.
  • A description based on what the site publishes, with sources kept so a description can be checked later.
  • Owner approval of the address before publication. Approval covers the exact address that was reviewed.

Recorded details and unknown values

Pricing, signup, language and platform are recorded only when a source supports them. Where a detail is unknown, it stays unknown and the listing shows it as unstated. Filters that ask for "no signup" or a specific price only match listings where that detail is recorded and still current, so an unknown value never gets counted as a match.

Link checks and removals

  • Once scheduled checking is enabled, listings are checked automatically, with faster re-checks for addresses that look unstable.
  • A single refusal, rate limit or timeout is not treated as a dead site. Repeated failures over separate checks are needed before a listing is quarantined.
  • A quarantined listing leaves ordinary browsing and search, and returns only after the address and its details are checked again.
  • Retired addresses are recorded so the same dead link is not published again.

Reporting a problem

If a listing is wrong, out of date, or should not be here, report it through the contact page. Include the address of the listing and what is incorrect.
